COVID 19 ~ Documenting Conspiracy Theories and Misinformation

The purpose of this entry is to document the history of the COVID 19 pandemic in the United States. In the current age of digital information, the rise of misinformation threatens to blur the lines between fact and fiction. Charged with political rhetoric and a growing distrust of government, the United States was deluged with misinformation from the onset of the pandemic. From its biological origins, to the transmission and its effects on the human immune system, nearly every aspect of the novel coronavirus was surrounded with disinformation which helped its steady surge throughout the nation. When news of the virus reached most Americans, it was greeted with a nonchalant reception. The president and many prominent health care pundits suggested that it would be, “no worse that the flu” and challenged the need for personal protection equipment. The virus was then received as similar to a common cold, with a focus on hand washing and sanitation measures. Not until July did a consensus emerge that accepted that the virus was airborne and the focus of prevention should switch from sanitation to ventilation.

The dynamics of the novel coronavirus; The Wuhan-Illuminati connection.

Before continuing on the origins of the 2019 coronavirus pandemic it is important to frame the looming presence of the “Illuminati” surrounding conspiracies in general. The common understanding of many conspiracies includes references to the “end times,” specifically those in the biblical prophesies found in Revelations. A powerful group of oligarchs take over the world via a catastrophic event paving the way for a one world government, bank and currency. From this “New World Order” a powerful leader would emerge. A biblical “Antichrist” that would enact a “mark of the beast” or “666” that would ultimately bring the end of time described in the Bible. Modern versions of the conspiracy claim that a barcode or microchip will be the “666 mark” and that it will be forced on the world through global panic and distress.

Understanding this framework, illustrates how the 2020 pandemic was ripe with fodder for neophyte conspiracy theorists. Although many viruses have emerged in modern times

Ethical Questions Arise After Scientists Brew Super Powerful 'SARS 2.0' Virus By Melissa CroninNovember 15, 2015,
This article published by Vice News in 2015 has been used in several conspiracy theories about the origins of COVID19. Recently it has issued warnings about the age of the article and its association to unproven origins of the novel coronavirus.

“More than a decade after its outbreak, the name “SARS” still incites memories of worldwide panic over a disease that, we thought at the time, couldn’t be stopped. Now, 13 years later, scientists have created a hybrid version of a virus that could be the world’s next pandemic, a “SARS 2.0.”

Federal investigators have learned that white supremacists discussed plans to use the coronavirus as a bioweapon, Yahoo News reported, citing a weekly intelligence brief from a division of the Department of Homeland Security.
“White Racially Motivated Violent Extremists have recently commented on the coronavirus stating that it is an ‘OBLIGATION’ to spread it should any of them contract the virus,” the document said.
White supremacists suggested targeting law enforcement and “nonwhite” people in particular.
They floated options like leaving “saliva on door handles” at local FBI offices, spitting on elevator buttons, spreading the virus in “nonwhite neighborhoods,” and being in public with their perceived enemies.
